La “locura” desde siempre ha generado temor y se ha intentado recluirla y estigmatizarla a través de la historia. Los antiguos barcos de los locos y los actuales hospitales psiquiátricos quizá no disten mucho en ese sentido. ¿Qué toca en nosotros que nos es mucho más fácil verla en el “otro”?.
La Nave del Olvido es el resultado de más de nueve meses de trabajo en el hospital Psiquiátrico Victor Larco Herrera (Lima 1994-96). El proyecto trata de crear un puente entre estos espacios de reclusión y la sociedad, para ver que tal vez las similitudes son mucho mayores que las diferencias y que esa aparente distancia es solo eso, apariencia. Para lograr esto se trató de restituirles la posibilidad de elección, de decisión.
Ubicándome en los distintos pabellones, esperaba que ellos iniciaran los primeros contactos. Luego introduje el equipo (cámara de formato grande 4x5 pulgadas) para que se fueran familiarizando con él, jugando ellos a fotografiarme. Recién en ese momento les planteaba el proyecto y los que querían ser fotografiados escogían el día, lugar, hora, vestimenta, actitud, etc., decisiones que los anticipaban imaginariamente a la construcción de la imagen que ellos querían o podían proyectar-retratar de sí mismos. De alguna forma fue un intento de restituirles un mínimo de respeto, buscando en una relación de iguales capturar, por un lado, el afecto y confianza que comenzaba a manifestarse en ambos lados; y, por otro, ser un simple catalizador de sus propias posibilidades de representación, de sus imágenes.

"Madness" has always generated fear and it has been entended to seclude it and stigmatized through history. The ancient ships for mad people, and the present psychiatric hospitals, in that sense, are not too far away. What does it touch in us that is much easier too see it in the other.
La Nave del Olvido (The Ship of Oblivion) is the result of a nine months work at the Psychiatric Hospital Larco Herrera (Lima, 1994-96). The project intends to built a bridge between these secluded spaces and the society, to show that maybe the similaarities are more than the differences and that this apparent distance is only that, an appearance. To achieve this, I tried to restore them back the possibility of election and decision.
Getting familiarized with the different hospital environments, I wanted for them to initiate the firts contacts. Afterwards, I introduced the equipment (4x5" camera) so they can start getting used with it, playing to take pictures of me. Just in that moment I explained them the project, and those who wanted to be photographed, had to choose the day, place, hour, clothes, attitude. This made them imagine the image they wanted to project of themselves.
In a way, it was an attempt of giving them back a minimum of respect, looking forward for a relation between equals, on one side of affection and confidence that it started to show in both sides, and on the other hand, be a simple catalyser of their own representation of their images.
